All roads lead to rome并非虚言. ---- BTW,令偶发现自己无知的是Pliny : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pliny_the_Elder (Maybe use Proxy) the famous letter by Pliny's nephew, Pliny the Younger, in Latin and English: http://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/Everyone/Pompeii/Destruction.html Introduction : In 79 A.D. Pliny the Elder, then Commander of the Roman Fleet, was stationed with his forces across the Bay of Naples at Misenum. As debri from the eruption began to rain down on the surrounding towns, Pliny marshaled his troops and sailed toward the spewing volcano to study the eruption and to attempt an ill-fated rescue, during which he died. But his nephew, known as Pliny the Younger, remained at Misenum and observed the events from across the bay, piecing together from the reports of those who had been with his uncle and his own observations, a vivid account of the disaster. This is preserved for us in two letters written by Pliny to the historian Tacitus. They remain our most important sources for the eruption that buried Herculaneum and Pompeii. . |
