Today is the last day I spend in Fosun. Looking back to the short period I have been here, I laugh and I complain as well. I’ve met someone who teaches me something that will benefit my life all along. I’ve experienced something that I hate but can do nothing to change. I’ve met some young friends at my age, meanwhile, I’ve known some others who are much older than I am, who broaden my vision in a special way. In the past two months, life is easy and not too tough as I experienced in Ebay. Although when five o’clock comes every afternoon, I’m the last one to leave the office. I’m not tired. Perhaps it’s a private-owned company. The culture here I embrace may differ from the one I experience on campus and in ebay. I want more challenge. I’m going to resign today. No matter what happens, I will smile to it. It’s not what one says to decide but what one does. Life is so cool…from a different point of view.

My life is brilliant, my life is pure”.


Military Expansion
 By STEVEN R. WEISMAN
Published: March 16, 2006
SYDNEY, March 16 – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the foreign minister of Australia struck markedly different tones Thursday over the rising power of China, with Ms. Rice criticizing its military expansion and the Australian warning against trying to “contain” Chinese ambitions.
The varied comments of Ms. Rice and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer underscored the uneasiness that Ms. Rice has found this week in Asia and Australia, a region that the United States once dominated as a superpower but now has to navigate uneasily amid China’s spreading influence.
Ms. Rice’s criticism of China was unusually tough, especially since she was speaking in China’s front yard and was planning to meet here later in the week with Mr. Downer and the foreign minister of Japan, Taro Aso, to discuss security issues. Mr. Aso has angered leaders in Beijing with his own criticism of China’s military buildup.
“There is no doubt that, as with any complex relationship, there are difficult issues as well as positive elements,” Ms. Rice said of the Chinese, praising American cooperation with Beijing on North Korea and Iran before going on to criticize Chinese military, economic and human rights policies.
Noting that at the recent National Peoples Conference, the Chinese announced a 14 percent increase in military spending, Ms. Rice said: “That’s a lot, and China should undertake to be transparent about what that means.”
She went on to refer to charges in the Bush administration that China has kept its currency artificially high in order to pump out exports, and to say that China had a poor record on protecting intellectual property rights, opening its government-controlled markets to foreign investment and protecting religious freedoms.
The planned meeting with Mr. Downer and Mr. Aso of Japan on Saturday, billed as a “trilateral security forum,” has stirred attention in East Asia as Japan’s relations with China have plummeted amid rising nationalist sentiment on both sides. The two countries are still arguing over issues going back to Japan’s invasion in the 1930’s.
But the three-way meeting, coupled with President Bush’s recently agreeing to condone India’s nuclear weapons program and supply nuclear aid to India, has also underscored concerns in Australia that the United States is trying to forge closer military cooperation countries surrounding that encircle China.
Before Ms. Rice arrived, Mr. Downer told Sky News: “We don’t support a policy of containment of china. I don’t think that’s going to be a productive or constructive policy at all.” His comments were described in the Australian press as an effort to assuage concerns in Beijing about American-Austrlaian policies.
Appearing at his news conference with Ms. Rice, Mr. Downer said that the United States and Australia were in agreement on the issue, however, “we’ve never had a concern that the United States was pursuing a policy of containment with China.” He said Australia felt “comfortable” with American policies on the issue.
Later, Ms. Rice was asked at by a university student about efforts to push against China. She said that if China cooperated economically and politically with other countries, its influence would be “terrific – not just good, terrific.”
The mixed comments about China came on a day in which Ms. Rice sought to reinforce relations with Australia after a period in which some Australians have felt neglected. Ms. Rice cancelled a planned visit here in January, and there has not been a permanent ambassador in Australia since 2004.
After a rousing speech to sailors aboard the U.S.S. Port Royal, a missile cruiser headed for the Persian Gulf, Ms. Rice spoke before an audience of a few hundred students from various universities and was confronted with tough questions about American policies toward Iraq, the Palestinians, China and civil liberties at home.
She had a private dinner Thursday evening with Prime Minister John Howard.
At the university forum, three hecklers – shouting “You’re a war criminal!” and “Iraqi blood is on your hands!” were quickly ejected as Ms. Rice said: “I’m very glad to see that democracy is alive and well at the university. I’m glad that it will also be alive and well at the University of Kabul and the University of Baghdad.”
Addressing Iraq, Ms. Rice said she was confident that Iraqis will forge a democracy and quell the insurgency, “but we must be patient with these people and patient with the course of democracy.”
As she has often in these settings, Ms. Rice spoke in fervent personal terms about democracy, recalling her own coming of age in Birmingham in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when it was in the grip of the Ku Klux Klan, bombings and a sense of hopelessness about the possibility of racial justice.
“In my lifetime, Birmingham transformed,” Ms. Rice added. “America transformed. I stand before you as a black Secretary of State, something that I think 30 or 40 years ago would have been thought impossible.”
The audience applauded warmly when she spoke about herself. But though politely addressed, most of the students’ questions were mostly critical, apparently reflecting polls that in Australia, as in many other countries, the United States has negative poll ratings.
One questioner noted that the United States had a low percentage of its national economy devoted to foreign aid to poor countries, compared to other rich countries, but Ms. Rice said that the Bush administration had increased foreign aid by 50 percent in the last five years and tripled foreign aid to Africa.
Asked about setting a goal of .7 percent of the national economy for foreign aid, Ms. Rice said: “I don’t believe that a specific target is really the appropriate way to think about this.” She explained that in the past American assistance had been wasted and spent on corrupt regimes, and that her government was trying to redirect aid as it increased.

During my three and a half years of wasting time on campus, everyday I just idle away. It's a shame on my life. Now life pays me back. On job-hunting, I gotta know how realistic and harsh the real world is. Hey, Amanda! You've already enjoyed your life too much. Now it's time for you to start a new life. I've learned how to appreciate the most classic works by the famouse writers dating back to thousands of years ago. However, when it comes to the current world affairs, I have no idea of what's happening in the world. Yeah, now I know more words than I was in senior high schoo. However, I still can't get the exact meaning while listening to standard voa. A respectable teacher tells me how he enjoys everyday coz he could listen to voa and dictate them exactly. I am kinda guilt. I haven't been that good so far. More frightening thing is that I know I will never be that good if I go on wasting my time like this. Job-hunting tells me a truth. Arduous working can add to your personal valuation. Then you are capable of obtaining a descent and enjoyable job. I am looking forward to that. I have confidence.



Children should begin their formal schooling at an early age












People have different views on what children should do at a very early age. Some think that children should begin their formal education and start to spend most of their time on studies. Others believe that it is still time for young children to play. Both views are based on respective ground.




Those who argue for the playing time for childern suggest that children at a very early age are still too young to focus their attention on learning. Their brain may not be ready for serious studies such as comprehension and memorizing learning materials. These people are partially right, for it is true that young childern can hardly concentrate. Their attention on one thing lasts for no longer than 15 minutes or so. But we can arrange classes for shorter periods, can’t we? And we can shift teaching subjects. Through putting them to study, young children are occupied with learnging but not with playing.




Those who argue for chilldren’s earyly commencement for formal education believe that being put to studies, children can develop good habit of studying, for the process of learning helps develop children’s mental abilities like the ability to memorize, the ability to understand and the ability to do simple calculation. Children’s habit of studying and love for learning are of great importance to youngsters because these two things set up the sound foundation for their future studies.




Having children start formal education at a very early age benefits young childern much more than simply letting them play most of their time. A good habits needs a long time to develop to become a second nature. More importantly, it is better to develop a good habit before a bad one may grow. Similarly, the love for learning should take toots for before the love for playing is established.










Should a person make an important decision alone?







A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. People who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you can give you good advice, give you a different prespective, or share their own experience.




When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in collage, I talked to my teachers and advisors, they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen unsuitable courses.




In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play. Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The day of the auditon, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked, she was able to provide me with another perspectiove on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a lead in the play.




Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decisition for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the precious year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encourter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.




Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspectiove and experience.










My opnion on advertisement













Advertisements appear everywhere in modern society. There are many way to advertise and ads come in different forms. Newspapers and billboards carry advertisements; some products are announced on TV and radio which have a wide audience. Advertising is a big industry and many agencies are set up for furnish a variety of services for it.




However, advertising is not welcome sometimes. A most irritating thing is to watch advertisements before and during films on TV. There are so many of them that they make you forget what you are sitting there for. The ironical thing is that advertisements of one type of things are often shown one after another so that you are confused as to which product you should choose. What’s more, advertising is not always truthful. The advertisers exaggerate the benefits of the merchandise they want to sell in order to gain more profits. Thus the consumer falls victim to such advertising.




Although there are disadvantages of ads, we can not forget the advantages and the conveniences they bring to us. First, by telling us where something is available, they may save us money and time. They guide us in finding suitable jobs and other information as well. Secondly, a wide range of activities and institutions receive finanical support through advertising. Without this support we would have to pay much more for newspaters and sports games. Thirdly, perfect advertisements even provide entertainment. A considerable amount of effort goes into their production. So in most cases the photography is truly artistic, the slogans are genuinely witty, and the situations are decidely funny.




Generally speaking, advertisements have become one of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today. You get the whole university experience. Plus, you interact more with other students. This includes not only your roommates, but everyone in your dormitory. The older students in the dormitory can be a big help for the new students. Keeping up with studies in your first year is hard enough. You should not have to worry about finding your way around and figuring out the university bureaucracy.



Living in the dormitory also make a student feel more a part of the uniersity community. There are more opportunities for becoimg involved in university activities and networking with students and university administraction.



Living off-campus, however, is a definite advantage for older students. Fingding an apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord’s regulations, cooking meals, and figuring out budgets are all good practice for life after graducation. This kind of independence helps older students grow in adulthood.



Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on around them.

Before the illness, I was much petted by parents, doing everything at will in the home.
学译：Before I became ill, I have received all the favor of my parents, just like a little tyrant at home.
Before I fell ill, I had been the bully under our roofs owing to my doting parents.
When isolated and taken into custody in a small house on the hillside of our garden, I felt like I was abandoned, getting more and more depressed.
学译：As soon as I was kept apart in a small flat built on the hillside in the garden, I suddenly felt being consigned to limbo, gloomily and disappointedly.
Feeling like being deposed into a cold palace, I began to taste the bitterness of depression and frustration immediately after I was segregated and confined in a small house on a hillside in our garden.
（I began to taste the bitterness of depression and frustration）的前后均有附加成分，句子显出“平衡美”。
At one dusk in spring, flowers were blooming wildly in the garden, my parents were holding a banquet, in which guests were gathering, laughters could be heard everywhere.
学译：On a spring evening, hundreds of flowers were in full bloom in the garden where my parents hosted a banquet. For a while, guests gathered in large number, laughing and talking, which could be heard clearly.
On a spring evening, my parents gave a banquet in the garden where a profusion of flowers were in full bloom. In no time, a crowd of their guests collected and laughter was heard all over there.

 做动作应为 perform an act，而不是 make an act（1997年第 8题），
 站起来应为 get to their feet，而不是get on their feet（1998年第 4题），等等。
 water rising away from the depths of the earth during（6）
hour of hunting yields in average about 100 edible calories（4）
 （把in 改成 on）
 departure．This is what his body wants to do，therefore（5）
 （把therefore 改成加but）
 as an hour of gathering produces 240．（5）
 （把as改成while）

1.1. What is language?

“Language is system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication. It is a system, since linguistic elements are arranged systematically, rather than randomly. Arbitrary, in the sense that there is usually no intrinsic connection between a work (like “book”) and the object it refers to. This explains and is explained by the fact that different languages have different “books”: “book” in English, “livre” in French, in Japanese, in Chinese, “check” in Korean. It is symbolic, because words are associated with objects, actions, ideas etc. by nothing but convention. Namely, people use the sounds or vocal forms to symbolize what they wish to refer to. It is vocal, because sound or speech is the primary medium for all human languages, developed or “new”. Writing systems came much later than the spoken forms. The fact that small children learn and can only learn to speak (and listen) before they write (and read) also indicates that language is primarily vocal, rather than written. The term “human” in the definition is meant to specify that language is human specific.

1.2. What are design features of language?

“Design features” here refer to the defining properties of human language that tell the difference between human language and any system of animal communication. They are arbitrariness, duality, productivity, displacement, cultural transmission and interchangeability

1.3. What is arbitrariness?

By “arbitrariness”, we mean there is no logical connection between meanings and sounds (see I .1). A dog might be a pig if only the first person or group of persons had used it for a pig. Language is therefore largely arbitrary. But language is not absolutely seem to be some sound-meaning association, if we think of echo words, like “bang”, “crash”, “roar”, which are motivated in a certain sense. Secondly, some compounds (words compounded to be one word ) are not entirely arbitrary either. “Type” and “write” are opaque or unmotivated words, while “type-writer” is less so, or more transparent or motivated than the words that make it. So we can say “arbitrariness” is a matter of degree.

1.4.What is duality?

Linguists refer “duality” (of structure) to the fact that in all languages so far investigated, one finds two levels of structure or patterning. At the first, higher level, language is analyzed in terms of combinations of meaningful units (such as morphemes, words etc.) ; at the second, lower level, it is seen as a sequence of segments which lack any meaning in themselves, but which combine to form units of meaning. According to Hu Zhanglin et al. (p.6) , language is a system of two sets of structures, one of sounds and the other of meaning. This is important for the workings of language. A small number of semantic units (words), and these units of meaning can be arranged and rearranged into an infinite number of sentences (note that we have dictionaries of words, but no dictionary of sentences!). Duality makes it possible for a person to talk about anything within his knowledge. No animal communication system enjoys this duality, or even approaches this honour.

1.5.What is productivity?

Productivity refers to the ability to the ability to construct and understand an indefinitely large number of sentences in one’s native language, including those that has never heard before, but that are appropriate to the speaking situation. No one has ever said or heard “A red-eyed elephant is dancing on the small hotel bed with an African gibbon”, but he can say it when necessary, and he can understand it in right register. Different from artistic creativity, though, productivity never goes outside the language, thus also called “rule-bound creativity” (by N.Chomsky).

1.6.What is displacement?

“Displacement”, as one of the design features of the human language, refers to the fact that one can talk about things that are not present, as easily as he does things present. In other words, one can refer to real and unreal things, things of the past, of the present, of the future. Language itself can be talked about too. When a man, for example, is crying to a woman, about something, it might be something that had occurred, or something that is occurring, or something that is to occur. When a dog is barking, however, you can decide it is barking for something or at someone that exists now and there. It couldn’t be bow-wowing sorrowfully for dome lost love or a bone to be lost. The bee’s system, nonetheless, has a small share of “displacement”, but it is an unspeakable tiny share.

1.7.What is cultural transmission?

This means that language is not biologically transmitted from generation to generation, but that the details of the linguistic system must be learned anew by each speaker. It is true that the capacity for language in human beings(N. Chomsky called it “language acquisition device”, or LAD) has a genetic basis, but the particular language a person learns to speak is a cultural one other than a genetic one like the dog’s barking system. If a human being is brought up in isolation he cannot acquire language. The Wolf Child reared by the pack of wolves turned out to speak the wolf’s roaring “tongue” when he was saved. He learned thereafter, with no small difficulty, the ABC of a certain human language.

1.8.What is interchangeability?

Interchangeability means that any human being can be both a producer and a receiver of messages. We can say, and on other occasions can receive and understand, for example, “Please do something to make me happy.” Though some people (including me) suggest that there is sex differentiation in the actual language use, in other words, men and women may say different things, yet in principle there is no sound, or word or sentence that a man can utter and a woman cannot, or vice versa. On the other hand, a person can be the speaker while the other person is the listener and as the turn moves on to the listener, he can be the speaker and the first speaker is to listen. It is turn-taking that makes social communication possible and acceptable.

Some male birds, however, utter some calls which females do not (or cannot?) , and certain kinds of fish have similar haps mentionable. When a dog barks, all the neighbouring dogs bark. Then people around can hardly tell which dog (dogs) is (are0 “speaking” and which listening.

1.9.Why do linguists say language is human specific?

First of all, human language has six “design features” which animal communication systems do not have, at least not in the true sense of them(see I .2-8). Let’s borrow C. F. Hocket’s Chart that compares human language with some animals’ systems, from Wang Gang(1998,p.8).

Secondly, linguists have done a lot trying to teach animals such as chimpanzees to speak a human language but have achieved nothing inspiring. Washoe, a female chimpanzee, was brought up like a human child by Beatnice and Alan Gardner. She was taught “American sign Language”, and learned a little that made the teachers happy but did mot make the linguistics circle happy, for few believed in teaching chimpanzees.

Thirdly, a human child reared among animals cannot speak a human language, not even when he is taken back and taught to lo to so (see the “Wolf Child”in I.7)

1.10.What functions does language have?

Language has at least seven functions: phatic, directive, Informative, interrogative, expressive, evocative and performative. According to Wang Gang (1988,p.11), language has three main functions: a tool of communication, a tool whereby people learn about the world, and a
