Horror gripped the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant if he might go out into the "No Man’s Land" between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.

"You can go," said the Lieutenant, "but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away." The Lieutenant’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway.

Miraculously he managed to reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend. "I told you it wouldn’t be worth it," he said. "Your friend is dead, and you are mortally wounded."

"It was worth it, though, sir," the soldier said.

"How do you mean ‘worth it’?" responded the Lieutenant. "Your friend is dead!"

"Yes sir," the private answered. "But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Jim, I knew you’d come.’"

Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it.

Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.

Yes this may be surprising, I was only 13 years old that time. But, don’t know how or why it happened to me so early. I fell deeply in love with a guy, who I used to think was annoying 2 months ago.

It was 1997, in Chittagong, Bang- ladesh, me and my family have just moved to a new apartment in a new area. So, after few weeks have passed, I started going back to school, since it was during Ramadan we moved. Well, I made some new friends in the neighborhood. This girl who was always hanging out with, her name was Ivy.

One day when I was going to school, I bumped into Ivy on the way out of my building, and she was standing next to this guy, he lived in the building right beside mine. He said “Hi” to me, and we just asked each other “how are you” and blah blah, then I had to leave. But I noticed that guy was looking at me. It was a different kind of look, look with love in his eyes. Few days later, I noticed whenever I go to school and come back from school, he is standing in his balcony, and smiling at me. If he is not around, and one of his friends see me, they start to yell out his name. Oh yeah, by the way, his name was Mamun.

So, I was very annoyed by those things. And I even told Ivy to tell Mamun to stop these foolishness. After my exams were over, I had a break. So I used to go to the roof and read books to spend my time. Mamun used to come to their roof also and both roofs where so close to each other that you can just jump from one to another.

Once I was reading a book, and I noticed Mamun come to their roof and he looked at me, and smiled. OH MY GOD! I don’t know what happened to me. That sweet smile just took me away. I smiled back at him, for the first time. I could never forget that moment. We used to smile at each other whenever we saw each other, but never had a chat. I was sure that he liked me a lot, because, anytime he would see me on the roof from his balcony, he came up to the roof right away. I fell in love with him very deeply. I was surprised that I did. The feelings I had was so beautiful and made me so happy.

Mamun did come to my roof one day to talk to me but I wanted him to go away. I didn’t want any one to see us talking. As you know, in Bangladesh rumors go around so fast. When we talked, I saw deep love in his eyes. I always smiled at him; I didn’t talk to him much. Still, life was going on so wonderfully. Mamun never told me he loved me. I thought that was because, I was 5/6 years younger than him.

Very soon, I found out that me and my family are leaving Bang- ladesh and coming to Canada. I was devas- tated. I cried all night but there was nothing to do. When Mamun found out, he asked me on the roof, if it was true. When I said yes, he asked how long will I be in Canada. The answer was maybe forever, we were going to settle in Canada. He looked depressed, all he said was “Oh”, then I told him out flight date.

The next month, it was Ramadan again. Mamun came to say good bye to me on the roof, he was leaving to spend his Eid with his family. That day, I was so sad, I felt like I lost something very important in my life. We said goodbye to each other, he said he thinks I am such a sweet girl, he hopes I have a great life in Canada. Oh my god, I couldn’t hold myself, I think my eyes became watery. I didn’t want him to see that I was crying. I said “you too” and tried to smile and left the roof right away.

That was the last day I ever saw my first love. Now 4 years later, here I am in CANADA. I have guy in my life now, whom I am deeply love with after Mamun. I never lose him.

I am ... over Mamun now. Everytime I remember those days, looking at each other on the roof, talking, I feel really down. I wonder where he is now, if we will even meet again... I can never forget my first love.

"Come in," God said to me, "so, you would like to interview Me?"

"If you have the time," I said.

He smiled through His beard and said: "My time is called eternity and is enough to do everything; what questions do you have in mind to ask me?"

"None that are new to you. What’s the one thing that surprises you most about mankind?"

He answered: "That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they never had never lived..."

His hands took mine and we were silent. After a long period, I said, "May I ask you another question?"

He replied with a smile.

"As a Father, what would you ask your children to do for the new year?"

"To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved.

To learn that it takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it.

To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives.

To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. There will be others better or worse than they are.

To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.

To learn that they should control their attitudes, otherwise their attitudes will control them.

To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them.

To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.

To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to show their feelings.

To learn that money can buy everything but happiness.

To learn that while at times they may be entitled to be upset, that does not give them the right to upset those around them.

To learn that great dreams do not require great wings, but a landing gear to achieve.

To learn that true friends are scarce, he/she who has found one has found a true treasure.

To learn that they are masters of what they keep to themselves and slaves of what they say.

To learn that they shall reap what they plant; if they plant gossip they will harvest intrigues, if they plant love they will harvest happiness.

To learn that true happiness is not to achieve their goals but to learn to be satisfied with what they already achieved.

To learn that happiness is a decision. They decide to be happy with what they are and have, or die from envy and jealousy of what they lack.

To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different.

To learn that those who are honest with themselves without considering the consequences go far in life.

To learn that even though they may think they have nothing to give, when a friend cries with them, they find the strength to appease the pain.

To learn that by trying to hold on to love ones, they very quickly push them away; and by letting go of those they love, they will be side by side forever.

(AB——I——C)、(A——B——I)和(AB——AB——I)的写法(其中A和B表示对立的观点，I表示我，C表示结论。


中间A：




My View on the Negative Effects of Some Advertisements




In my mind, the government and the citizens should join hands to put an end to these false advertisements. On the one hand, the government should punish the advertisers severely lest they harm the customers again. On the other hand, common citizens should report such harmful advertisements as soon as possible. Only by the joint efforts of the government and the common people can we do away with false advertisements.




Positive and Negative Aspects of Sports (1993.1)




The Two-Day Weekend (1996.1)





abroad adv.


adapt v.


affect v.


allusion n.暗示 illusion n.幻觉 delusion n.错觉 elusion n.逃避


altar n.祭坛 alter v.改变


amend v.


amoral a.


angel n.天使 angle n.


assent v.同意 ascent n.上升 accent n.口音


assure v.保证 ensure v.使确定 insure n.保险


aural adj.耳的 oral adj.口头的


baron n.


beam n.梁；光束 bean n.豆 been v. have 过去式


champion n.冠军 champagne n.香槟酒 campaign n.战役


chicken n.鸡 kitchen n.厨房


chore n.家务活 chord n.和弦 cord n.细绳


cite v.引用 site n.场所 sight n.视觉




commerce n.商业 commence v.开始


compliment n.赞美 complement n.附加物


confirm v.确认 conform v.


contact v./n.接触 contract n.合同 contrast v./n.对照


contend v.


context n.


continual adj.


costume n.服装 custom n.习惯


council n.议会 counsel v./n.忠告 consul n.领事


crow n.乌鸦 crown n.王冠 clown n.小丑 cow n.牛


dairy n.牛奶厂 diary n.日记


decent adj.


dessert n.甜食 desert n.沙漠v.放弃 dissert v.写论文


dose n.一剂药 doze v.打盹




drought n.


emigrant n.


except v.除外 expect v.期望 accept v.接受


excerpt n.


excess n. 超过 exceed v.超过 excel v.擅长


expand v.扩张 expend v.花费 extend v.延长


expect v.期望 respect v.尊敬 aspect n.方面


inspect v.视察 suspect v.


extensive adj.广泛的 intensive adj.


floor n.地板 flour n.面粉


glide v.滑翔 slide v.使滑行 slip v.跌落


hotel n.


immoral n.


implicit adj.含蓄的 explicit adj.明白的


incident n.事件 accident n.意外


inspiration n.灵感 aspiration n.渴望


later adv.


latitude n.纬度 altitude n.高度 gratitude n.感激


lone adj.孤独的 alone adj.单独的 lonely adj.


loose adj.


march n.


monkey n.猴子 donkey n.驴


mortal adj.致命的 metal n.金属 mental adj.神经的


medal n.


pat v./n.


patent n.专利 potent adj.有力的 potential adj.


police n.警察 policy n.政策 politics n.政治


pray v.祈祷 prey n.猎物


precede v.


principal n.校长adj.主要的 principle n.原则


prospect n.前景 perspective n.透视法


protest n./v.抗议 protect v.保护


purpose n.目的 suppose v.假设 propose v.建议


quite adv.


require v.需要 inquire v.询问 enquire v.询问 acquire v.获得


revenge v.报仇 avenge v.为...报仇


scare v./n.惊吓 scarce adj.


stationery n.文具 stationary adj.固定的


steal v.偷 steel n.钢


story n.故事 storey n.楼层 store n.商店


strike v.打 stick v.坚持 strict adj.严格的


strive v.努力 stride v.大步走


sweet adj.甜的 sweat n.汗水


through prep.通过 thorough adj.


though conj.


wonder v./n.




Taxes, Taxes, and More Taxes

 Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes. Americans do not have a corner on the "death" market, but many people feel that the United States leads the world with the worst taxes.
 Taxes consist of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.
 Salaried people who earn more than a few thousand dollars must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies from person to person. It depends on their salaries. The federal government has a graduated income tax, that is, the percentage of the tax (14 to 70 percent) increases as a person's income increases. With the high cost of taxes, people are not very happy on April 15, when the federal taxes are due.
 The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which you buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a packet of cigarettes for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent is that state, when the cost of the cigarettes is twenty-seven cents. This figure includes the sales tax. Some states use income tax in addition to sales tax to raise their revenues. They state tax laws are diverse and confusing.
 The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (people who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is charged on cars in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, public words and municipal buildings.
 Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are wording one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often protest that the government uses their tax dollars in the wrong way. They way that it spends too much on useless and impractical programs. Although Americans have different views on many issues, they tend to agree on one subject: taxes are too high.




BUBBLE INFLATION


A market that goes up 200 per cent in less than 18 months, and trades on a price-to-earnings multiple of about 50 is not necessarily a bubble. But if it looks like a crocodile and grins like a crocodile, it is probably best to treat it as a crocodile, just in case. China's stock market has inflated to a worrying level, and because of Chinese policy and the state of the Chinese economy, it could go higher before it falls.

Penniless college students, housewives, and taxi drivers are reportedly flocking to deal in a Shanghai market that is up more then 40 per cent so far this year. Chinese investors have shrugged off a caution by the governor of the People's Bank of China and pushed shares to valuations that are extremely optimistic, if not yet insane.

But valuations do not matter much in a bubble. In 1990 many Japanese shares reached price-to-earnings multiples in the 1980s, and in 2000 the Nasdaq market in the US traded at more than 100 times its constituents' profits. Once investors start to buy shares purely because they are going up, what counts is whether they have the confidence to keep the process going.

Two features of China's economy encourage that kind of confidence.

First, like every other economy at an early stage of development, there are structural problems that can force money into the stock market. There are not many domestic bonds and bank deposits barely keep pace with inflation. China, still somewhat communist, has capital controls that prevent individuals investing abroad. Chinese citizens' only real investment choices are property, which is illiquid, and the stock market. It was always going to be bubbly.

Second, China's fixed exchange rate makes it hard to keep credit growth under control. The People's Bank of China may have to buy $500bn of foreign currency with renminbi this year to keep the exchange rate down. But the exporters who receive those RMB deposit them in China's commercial banks, so the PBoC has to hoover up the RMB by selling government bonds to the banks, to prevent explosive growth in the money supply.

But sterilising reserve accumulation of $500bn a year – a level unprecedented in economic history – is becoming increasingly hard and rapid growth in bank lending adds fuel to the stock-market fire. There are still things the Chinese authorities can do: liberalise capital outflows, free up domestic markets, and float more state companies to increase the supply of shares to investors. But China may not be able to avoid a large currency appreciation for too much longer.






