Do you agree or disagree the following statement:
It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts
"Facts win over every eloquent speech", quoted from the Chinese old adage. With rapidly development of modern society, knowledge and skills are full of the whole world: every day there are so many books published, new fields discovered and new fashion prevailing. From childhood to adult, even to death, one person has had to learn new things one after another in order to catch up with the pace of the world. If you pass by a library or school, you will find large amount of people and students engrossed themselves in books or computers. At the same time, the governments also get themselves into enthusiasm on calling their people for learning and learning, and seriously believe that new ideas and concepts would impulse the improvement of their whole nations. But in these composition, I must give our government a suggestion that students not only understand ideas and concepts, but also pay regard for learning facts.
Every idea and concept must be put into practice before it is proved true. In ancient time, when the Dane invaded the England, they have enormous amount of soldiers compared with the native troop. The Danish troops easily defeated every resistance along the road to the capital of England. At this time, every idea could be heard by the English king, Alfred, was surrendering to the Dane or escaping from the capital. But Alfred didn't trust these ideas and he was willing to find out the truth. So he disguised himself as a minstrel and bravely came into the Danish camps. He stayed in camps for several days and covered himself up by his ballads and acrobatic tricks who had learnt in his youth. He was able to find out everything he wanted. he found that the Danish discipline was slack; their commissariat often depended on raiding. So when Alfred went back his own camps with confidence, he proved that those previous ideas was wrong. instead of risk attacking the Dane in open battle, he harried his rival who followed him for a long way and attacked the Danish raiding parties. Soon hunger assailed the Danish troops and forced them to surrender to the king, Alfred. If Alfred accepted these others's ideas, I think, the ancient history of England would be revised.
In addition, In modern society, many new ideas and concepts emerge while many ideas will be out-dated. So paying more attention to facts is able to make us learn more practical ideas and concepts. We can concentrate on solving the problem, rather than grasping every ideas and concepts which we may not use.
All in all, in such a fast-growing country, there is enormous amount of ideas and concepts, almost overwhelming us. But if we get down to learning facts, we can probably make use of these ideas and concepts efficiently.
