The Tale of Zhou

At the age of 18, Xiao Zhou fled from his native Hubei Province to Guangzhou where he sold wares on the street before spending some time in prison for fighting. After being released, Xiao Zhou joined a circus and made his way selling contraband pharmaceuticals. In 2000, Xiao Zhou is kidnapped but friends help to negotiate his freedom. It is at this point that we meet Xiao Zhou. He is now 27-years old and wants to lead a normal life, “to go legit.” For two years, the camera follows Xiao Zhou as he tries to find a different path forward.
The Tale of Zhou is the first segment of a five-part documentary series entitled Southern Stories focused around the lives of five individuals who have migrated to the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou in search of fortune and a better life. Despite their varied backgrounds, these protagonists are inextricably linked when their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways.
The product of four years of work by directors Jiang Ping and Luo Jian, Southern Tales is an incisive look at the issues facing Chinese urban migrants today. Ambitious in scale, brutally honest in content, Southern Tales calls to mind such epic Chinese documentaries as Wang Bing’s West of Tracks. A must-see for anyone interested in the current state of China’s mega-cities and the challenges that await rural migrants who would seek their fortunes there.
Jiang Ping studied Journalism at the Hunan Radio and Television University from which she graduated in 1983. She pursued further news studies at the Beijing Radio and Television University where she received a second degree in 1988. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese language in 1992. For two decades, Jiang Ping worked in Hunan Province at Zhuzhou City TV, where her positions included Journalist, Director of the Features Department, and Deputy Executive Director. In 2002, she resigned from the TV station to work on the production of the five-part documentary series Southern Tales, for which The Tale of Zhou forms the first segment. Her films have received national and provincial broadcast television awards.
Luo Jian earned a degree from the Communications Department at Qiqihar Railway University in 1995 and then continued studies in business management at the Chinese Communist Party School. Upon graduating in 1998, Luo Jian began working at Hunan Province’s Zhuzhou City TV, serving over the years as Program Host, Editor, Program Director and, finally as the Director of the Publicity Department. In 2002, he resigned from Zhuzhou TV to work on Southern Tales. His films have received national and provincial broadcast television awards.
